Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning: What's the Difference?

People often book a "cleaning" expecting one thing and receive another. The confusion almost always comes down to two very different services sharing one word. Here is the difference, clearly.
Regular cleaning maintains
Regular (routine) cleaning keeps an already-clean space presentable. It covers the surfaces you see and touch every day:
- Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors
- Dusting furniture and surfaces
- Wiping kitchen counters and appliance exteriors
- Cleaning and sanitising toilets and sinks
- Emptying bins and general tidying
A routine clean of a 3-bedroom flat takes a small crew a few hours. Done weekly or bi-weekly, it keeps a home consistently guest-ready.
Deep cleaning resets
Deep cleaning goes after everything routine cleaning skips, including what you cannot see:
- Behind and under furniture and appliances
- Inside kitchen cabinets, and the grease film on tiles and extractors
- Bathroom descaling: tiles, glass, grout lines, and fittings
- Doors, frames, skirtings, switches, and handles
- Interior windows, tracks, and nets
- Ceiling fans, vents, and light fittings
A proper deep clean of the same 3-bedroom flat takes a full crew an entire day, sometimes two. It is priced accordingly, because it is several times the work.
The simple decision rule
Ask one question: does the space need to be maintained, or reset?
- Cleaned professionally within the last 1 to 2 months, and just needs upkeep? Regular cleaning.
- No professional clean in months (or ever), moving in or out, just renovated, or preparing for an event? Deep cleaning first.
The most cost-effective pattern we see in Port Harcourt homes: one deep clean to reset the space, then a routine schedule to hold the standard. The routine visits stay cheap because the deep clean did the heavy lifting.
What about offices?
The same logic applies. Offices on a daily or weekly contract stay presentable, but carpets, upholstery, high dusting, and washroom descaling still need a periodic deep clean. Good contracts build one in every quarter.
