Keeping Your Home Clean During Harmattan: A Survival Guide
Guides · · 2 min read

Every year between roughly November and February, harmattan turns cleaning into a losing battle. You dust in the morning, and by evening the film is back. You cannot stop the season, but you can stop most of the dust from settling where it hurts, and clean far smarter in the meantime.
Slow the dust at the entry points
Most harmattan dust walks in through gaps and open windows on the windward side of the house.
- Keep windows on the dusty side closed during the day; ventilate briefly in the early morning when the air is calmest
- Fit or repair window nets; they catch a surprising share of coarse dust
- Roll a towel or fit a door seal under exterior doors with visible gaps
- Leave shoes at the door during the season; they carry fine dust deep into the house
Change how you clean
Harmattan dust is fine and dry. The wrong technique just relocates it.
- Damp-wipe, never dry-dust. A dry cloth throws fine dust back into the air. A slightly damp microfiber cloth traps it.
- Top to bottom, always. Shelves first, floors last, or you clean the floor twice.
- Mop more, sweep less. Sweeping lifts fine dust into the air; it settles right back. Vacuum or damp-mop instead.
- Wash curtains and nets mid-season. They act as filters and eventually saturate.
Protect the vulnerable things
- Cover electronics you rarely use; TVs, consoles, and routers pull dust in with their own heat
- Store off-season clothes in closed bags or boxes; open wardrobe shelves collect a dust layer weekly
- Wipe leather furniture with a barely damp cloth weekly; embedded dust grinds into the finish
- Rinse or wipe AC filters monthly during the season; a clogged filter recirculates dust and strains the unit
Give the house one mid-season reset
By January, most Port Harcourt homes carry a fine layer in places weekly cleaning never reaches: on top of wardrobes, inside vents, behind furniture, in rug fibres. A single mid-season deep cleaning resets the baseline and makes the rest of the season manageable. Sofas and rugs benefit most; extraction pulls out the dust that vacuuming leaves behind, which is exactly what our upholstery cleaning crews do all harmattan long.
The season always ends. The dust in your sofa does not leave on its own. A little strategy in November saves a lot of scrubbing in March.
